Four New LEGO Sonic The Hedgehog Sets Are Coming in August

Great news for Sonic the Hedgehog fans: four new sets have just been unveiled by LEGO, bringing the blue blur to life in toy form once again.

Ranging in price from £25 to £95, the upcoming LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog sets are undoubtedly playsets aimed at younger builders. That means they’re not to the same scale (or style) as last year’s LEGO Ideas Sonic the Hedgehog set, which is sure to disappoint some adult collectors.

Rather, the new sets are larger, featuring actionable play pieces, like a speed sphere and launcher so Sonic can actually speed through the sets, which can be built together like large, real-life levels. They’re comparable to LEGO’s Mario range in that regard, then, except there’s no digital elements here – just pure, physical play.

We admit we like the look of the new sets – they’re colourful, bold and appear to capture the essence of Sonic. We’re just disappointed they aren’t to the same scale as the Ideas set: we’d have loved to have scenes from other iconic Lego levels alongside Green Hill Zone.

Here’s a look at each of the four upcoming LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog sets, all set to release on 1st August.

LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog 76992 Amy’s Animal Rescue Island

  • £46.99
  • 388 pieces
  • Age 7+
  • Two minifigures: Tails and Amy

Perhaps our favourite of the upcoming LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog sets, Amy’s Animal Rescue is filled with cute little touches – and some adorable microfigure animals (Picky, Pocky and Flicky). More details are available on LEGO’s website.

LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog 76994 Sonic’s Green Hill Zone Loop Challenge

  • £94.99
  • 802 pieces
  • Age 8+
  • Three minifigures: Sonic, Amy and Dr. Eggman

LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog Green Hill Zone Loop Challenge is the largest of the upcoming sets. This one comes with a speed sphere and launcher, so you can make Sonic fly around the loop and pass through other obstacles of the course. With each part of the course broken down into smaller elements, we get the impression that you’ll be able to lay it out however you’d like – LEGO Super Mario style. Head to LEGO.com for more information.

LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog 76990 Sonic’s Speed Sphere Challenge

  • £24.99
  • 292 pieces
  • Age 6+
  • One minifigure: Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic’s Speed Sphere Challenge is the cheapest (and smallest) set of the upcoming LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog range. But despite its budget pricetag, it still features a speed sphere and launcher, allowing for interactive fun. There’s no loop-de-loop, but there is a ramp to travel up, an archway to pass through and some gold rings to collect. More details are available on LEGO.com.

LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog 76991 Tails’ Workshop and Tornado Plane

  • £37.99
  • 376 pieces
  • Age 6+
  • Two minifigures: Sonic and Tails

You can’t have a Sonic the Hedgehog set without featuring Tails’ iconic plane, can you? This small playset features a workshop for Tails to tinker with his engine while Sonic simply chills out. Or at least that’s the way the promotional artwork sells it. Feels about right. More information on the set is available on the official LEGO website.

Are there more LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog sets still to come?

We’d say yes: more LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog sets are still to be announced. One thing in particular gives this away: the set numbers. LEGO series always run in sequence, but here we have 76990, 76991, 76992 and 76994. There’s no 76993! That’s very likely to be an upcoming set.

However, it is possible that LEGO 76993 is a cancelled set that was scheduled to release alongside these, but no longer will. But we’re fully expecting something else to come along and fill the gap before long.
