Legendary ship The Endurance is getting the Lego treatment this month
Lego calls it at a “premium replica”.
Lego has just lifted the lid on The Endurance, the latest Lego Icons set that’s launching later this month. Based on the legendary ship captained by explorer Ernest Shackleton, this brick-built tribute will launch on 29th November, costing £229.99.
There’s a very good chance you already know the story of The Endurance. This three-masted schooner set out into the Antarctic waters in 1915 as part of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition — but tragedy struck when the ship became stuck in ice within the Weddell Sea.
Thankfully, the crew survived and, after several months of living in cold, harsh conditions, they were rescued. In 2022, more than 100 years after The Endurance sank, its wreckage was found more than 3,000 metres under the surface. You can read more about the Endurance’s story here.
Lego’s rendition of The Endurance pays homage to Shackleton and his crew and, of course, the ship itself. Called a “premium replica”, it features three masts, 10 full sails, intricate rigging and a red ensign flag. The deck itself features realistic detail, with sections that can be removed to give access to the cabins and steam engine.
There are also four detachable lifeboats, an anchor, and a working wheel that operates the ship’s rudder. The only thing we’re slightly disappointed by is the fact there are no minifigures: the boat isn’t quite minifigure scale, but a Shackleton for display purposes would have been a nice touch. There is at least a display placard with printed information about the boat.
If you do want a Shackleton minifigure, however: all is not lost. If you purchase Lego Icons The Endurance when it launches on 29th November, you’ll get a free model of Shackleton’s LIfeboat, which comes with minifigures of Ernest Shackleton and photographer Frank Hurley. You’ll have to act quickly at launch though: these exclusive free gifts typically sell out within a day or two. Often a matter of hours.
Shackleton’s Lifeboat has a suggested RRP of £21.99, but of course it won’t be available to buy separately. The only way to get it will be to buy The Endurance — unless you want to pay a premium from a third-party seller, of course.
Lego Icons The Endurance is made up of 3,011 pieces, and it has an age rating of 18+, making this a set for display purposes rather than play. But with a price tag of £229.99, that’s not at all surprising. More details can be found on Lego’s official product listing.
