This Lego Ideas Disney Pixar Luxo Jr. set brings the ball-squashing mascot to life

Even if you’ve never watched Pixar’s original Luxo Jr. short, chances are you’ll have seen this hopping, ball-squashing lamp popping up as part of Pixar’s pre-movie intro animation. And now, thanks to one enterprising builder, you can own a Lego version of Pixar’s Luxo Jr.

The set is the work of Toby Brett, who submitted the set to Lego Ideas back in September 2022. “This would be a fine addition to any fan of the Pixar films’ collection and would look great alongside WALL-E, characters from Toy Story or the Incredibles who have all been made in Lego form before,” he remarked. Looking at the final set, he’s not wrong.

The set, Lego Ideas Disney Pixar Luxo Jr 21357, is near-identical to Brett’s original submission, at least on the surface. According to Lego, the ball itself has a hidden surprise: “It opens up to reveal hidden easter eggs inspired by popular Disney and Pixar movies, including Up,” the official description says. It appears that you can’t flatten it, as seen in the original short. In fact, it looks like it’s made for display rather than play. But it’s an adorable little set, and Pixar fans should absolutely love having it on their shelf.

It’s also surprisingly fairly priced, given that Lego Ideas sets tend to cost more than their non-Ideas equivalents. Made up of 613 pieces, the Lego Ideas Disney Pixar Luxo Jr 21357 set will cost £59.99/$69.99 and is for builders aged 18 or over.

We’re eager to see just what kind of lighting kits will be available for this model. Several companies specialise in creating LED lighting sets for Lego models, and we’d love to see Luxo Jr. lit up. Right now, its bulb is for show but adding in a few LEDs could take it to the next level.
