Star Wars fans are arguing over Lego Bikini Princess Leia

It’s all Jabba the Hutt’s fault.

Star Wars Lego Princess Leia, in her Gold Bikini outfit, firing the skiff gun on Jabba's Barge.

The Lego Ultimate Collector Series Jabba’s Sail Barge is just days away from release, and while its £429.99 price might be too rich for some, it’s an undeniable awesome-looking set. Except, some Lego-loving Star Wars aren’t entirely on board with the ‘new’ Lego Bikini Princess Leia figure.

As spotted by BrickSet, the Lego Princess Leia figure included in the set, captured by Jabba the Hutt and held prisoner on her barge, has had her ‘bikini’ bottoms turned into shorts. It’s a minor change but the internet being the internet, it’s caused a bit of a stir.

“This is a $400 set and they some how found ways to make it worse,” grumbles one Twitter/X user. “Woke result,” adds another. However, we’re happy to report that many of the other Twitterati were more positive about it.

“I’m happy with the new changes we don’t need over sexualization of Lego minifigures”, one comment read. “I love the 2024 minifig! Huge upgrade in my opinion,” said another.

The conversation also turned to the topic of just why Lego make this change. Princess Leia was one of the original Star Wars trilogy’s few female characters. So putting her in that outfit, even at at villain’s behest, raised a few eyebrows.

The figure isn’t a regular fixture in Lego’s line-up, at least compared to Leia’s other incarnations, and it was suggested the change was necessary for Disney to actually let Lego use the figure again. Others chipped in saying it could be a cost-saving measure, though we don’t expect Lego to comment.

Lego Star Wars Ultimate Collector Series: Jabba’s Sail Barge is out this October 6th, and if you sign up for a free Lego Insiders membership, you can order it from October 3rd.
