Out soon, this Lego Icons Blacktron Renegade spaceship is a wonderful gothy flashback

The ’80s are back and they’re gothier than ever.

What’s the gothiest Lego set of all time? This Lego Ideas The Nightmare Before Christmas? Something in Lego’s Wednesday range? No, it’s this Lego Icons Blacktron Renegade 10355 starship set which has more black than anything we’ve seen outside of Star Wars.

Sure, there’s a bit of yellow in there, but it’s not just the colour either. This whole vessel, which also boasts an alternate build, looks like a gigantic flying pitchfork. It’s based on a smaller Blacktron set which was released in the 1980s, one of several put out under the same theme.

Made up of 1151 pieces, it’s 47cm long, 30cm wide and 9cm tall and is for builders aged 18+, though we can absolutely see this getting played with. The set includes a robot and three minifigures, who, naturally, have their visors blacked out.

The main build is the trident-shaped ship and an accompanying buggy, and the ship’s various sections can be detached. On top of that, the set can also be assembled as a pair of menacing mechs. While it’s not technically the same as the original set, it looks awesome and absolutely nails the ’80s Lego vibe. Let’s hope those helmets don’t snap like they did in the ’80s.

It’s not the first time Lego has revisited those fondly-remembered 1980s space sets. The company released the Lego Micro Launchpad set as Gift With Purchase, which while it had less black, still channeled those original sets. However, the set quickly sold out and is currently only available through eBay.

This Lego Icons Blacktron Renegade 10355 set will be priced at £89.99, and is available to all from January 4th. However, Lego Insiders can order it from January 1st, via Lego’s website. You can join the Insiders programme for free if you want that early access and the set should also be hitting major stores on or after January 4th.
