Lego Ideas gets retro with this blocky Sega Mega Drive

No, that’s not Sonic, but there’s a good explanation.

Lego Ideas Sega Mega Drive

Remember that Lego Ideas Sony PlayStation 2? Ideas has just got even more retro, with a fan-made Lego version of the Sega Mega Drive, and I can’t decide which I want more.

This new Lego Ideas submission, based on the original version of the Sega Mega Drive, is the work of builder HolographicMorro090 and it nails the look of the console, right down to its joypad and boxed Mega Drive game.

Granted, HolographicMorro090’s choice of games may raise an eyebrow or two; he’s gone with Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle instead of the iconic Sonic the Hedgehog. But, to be fair, this particular game debuted two years before Sonic the Hedgehog, back when Sega was still trying to make him their mascot.

Beside which, HolographicMorro090 figured including Sonic would be breaking the rules and they’re probably right. Lego’s Ideas rules state that a submission cannot include “Currently active or announced licenses,” and Lego’s currently putting out Sonic sets.

This Sega Mega Drive Lego Ideas submission is made up of 1219 pieces and boasts an impressive amount of attention to detail, right down to the little red LED light and the air vents. And while there’s only one controller included, there’s enough room for two.

So how is it doing? At the moment it has 1,551 supporters, with just over a year to hit the 5,000 mark. I’m hoping that since Sega already has a deal with Lego for the Sonic license, this has a good chance of happening. And as much as I like the NES, which already has an official Lego set, the Sega Mega Drive was always my console.
