Lego Super Mario World Mario and Yoshi is a party in the front, business in the back

Lego and Nintendo have announced Lego Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi set, a 15 inch model of Mario and his trusty dinosaur steed, but we’re in two minds about it.

From the front, this Lego Super Mario World set looks absolutely awesome. It’s a pixel-perfect recreation of the duo, and even better, it’s animated. With the turn of a lever, the model moves, with Yoshi sticking his tongue out while Mario bounces up and down.

Okay, that sounds a little filthy, but if you’ve played Lego Super Mario World you’ll know what mean. Unlike Lego’s range of modular Super Mario sets, it’s intended as a display piece and is rated for builders age 18+. That said, it does have an ‘action tag’ so you can add a figure from one of those sets.

Made up of 1215 pieces the Lego Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi set is priced at £114.99/$129.99. It’s not shipping till October 1st 2024, but you can pre-order it now from the official Lego Store. That’s probably a good idea, given how in demand this set is likely to be.

However, while this set is impressive enough from the front, we’re a little creeped out by its rear. Turn it around and you see all the moving parts that work together to animate it. Sure, there they’re by necessity, but it’s giving us major, major Dead Silence vibes.

If you’ve seen the ending of that movie you’ll know exactly what we’re talking about. It feels like some Nintendo-worshipping maniac has captured Mario and Yoshi and just hollowed them out for display. We’re not sure we could sleep with this in our house.

If that mental image hasn’t put you off, you can pre-order this Lego Super Mario World: Mario and Yoshi set right now, for delivery from October 1st 2024.
