Welcome in the Chinese New Year with these three new Lego sets
Lego’s getting ready for Chinese New Year.
Are you ready for Chinese New Year? Lego is, and it’s unveiled three new sets, arriving this January. Granted, it’s not even Black Friday, but Lego likes to get ahead of the game when it comes to announcements.
There are three Lego Chinese New Year sets in all, Lego Lucky Cat 40813, Lego Trotting Lantern 80116 and Lego Good Fortune 80117, each in the same beautiful gold and red boxes, with a “The Spring Festival” logo on them. Here’s what each set has to offer.
Lego Lucky Cat 40813
- Price: £24.99
- Number of pieces: 280
- Age rating: 9+
This adorable model is based on those traditional Lucky Cat figurines and, like them, it just sits there looking cute and pettable. How can you not love those teeny little paw pads? You can choose to have their fuzzy belly decorated with a gold coin or a wish for good luck, the latter of which appears to be on a sticker.
But while we wouldn’t describe this set as a play piece, it does have a little interactivity. Like the real-life mini statues, you can make them wave their paw up and down, wishing you good fortune for the new year. Awwww.
Lego Trotting Lantern 80116
- Price: £89.99
- Number of pieces: 1295
- Number of minifigures: 5
- Age rating: 9+
This Lego Trotting Lantern set, on the other hand, does have real play potential, and it’s very, very cool. Closed, it resembles a Chinese lantern but it unfolds to reveal three festive scenes, including a food stall, a decorations stall and a mini shadow theatre.
And, unlike the other sets in this line, it comes with minifigures, 2 adults, 2 children and a person in a Year of the Snake costume. Even better, the whole set lights up in lantern mode, letting you direct the light. Don’t count on it being strong enough to serve as a nightlight, but it’s still a neat touch.
Lego Good Fortune 80117
- Price: £69.99
- Number of pieces: 1021
- Age rating: 9+
Finally, there’s this Lego Good Fortune set, featuring an assortment of festival items, “Two magpies, a vase of fortune red fruit, a persimmon fruit, 3 golden ingots and a calligraphy pen with a scroll”. It’s undeniably eye-catching, and while it’s not really a play piece, it’s absolutely gorgeous to look at. We can just imagine putting this on a sideboard or similar and having it become a talking piece for visitors.

All these three sets release this January 1st, 2025. There’s no option to pre-order them, unfortunately, but we wouldn’t be surprised if Lego offers a similarly-themed Gift With Purchase. So keep your eyes open and your wallet ready and you can grab these from New Years Day onwards.
