Coming next month, Lego Ideas Botanical Garden is an expensive beauty

Plant-tastic.

Lego Ideas 21353 Botanical Garden

I scoffed when I saw the price of the newly-announced Lego Ideas Botanical Garden: £289.99. Woah. It’s the third-most expensive Ideas set so far (beat only by the Grand Piano and the Dungeons & Dragons castle) and, despite being comparable in size, it’s more expensive than any of the Modular Buildings Collection.

But — and this is a big but — it’s absolutely stunning. At 3,792 pieces, it’s no slouch in the size department. It might not be quite as big as the last Modular set (the Natural History Museum comes in at 4,014 pieces) but it seems to pack in far more detail. From its domed glass roof to its curved windows, every element of this Botanical Garden greenhouse is simply stunning.

And that’s just on the outside. Let’s look at the set in more detail on the inside:

The central area of the Botanical Garden has a paved walkway (I love a paved floor in a Lego set!), decorated around its edges with different plants. There’s a balcony area which can be reached via a very cleverly-constructed staircase made out of fence panels.

There’s a little shop area and an outdoor seating area, so plenty of spaces to display the set’s 12 minifigures (and wildlife: it also comes with a dog, a squirrel, a rabbit, a beetle and four birds).

The crowning glory, though, is one that true botanists will really enjoy. The Lego Ideas Botanical Garden is home to over 35 real-world plant species, recreated in Lego. You’ll find Coffea arabica, Acer Palmatum, Eucalyptus pauciflora and Phoenix dactylifera, amongst others.

The original Lego Ideas submission

The set is based on Goannas89’s Lego Ideas submission. Some changes have been made, as always. The most noticeable is that the Botanical Garden has been lowered, with one less tier on the roof. The indoor space has been changed, too, giving more definition to separate spaces.

I’m pleased to say that the clever staircase has been carried over from the original design, however. And, of course, the core idea of including real types of plants remains. I love both the original design and the final retail design, honestly.

Lego Ideas Botanical Garden: Price and availability

As I said earlier, the price of the Lego Ideas Botanical Garden is the only thing I’m not a fan of: it’s £289.99. It’ll be available from 4th November, although Lego Insiders will be able to pick it up from 1st November.

And you might be wise to grab it early, because purchases from 1st November will come with a gift with purchase: a cute little Entrance Gate that comes with a groundskeeper minifigure, a butterfly and a bluebird.

More information can be found about the Lego Ideas Botanical Garden on the Lego website.
