Looks Like a 50th Anniversary Star Wars LEGO Set is On The Way Soon

LEGO, a company that likes to tease its fans with cryptic social media messages before actually announcing something, has put out a tweet that suggests a new LEGO Star Wars set is on the way.

“Proud to join the celebration of the Lucasfilm 50th anniversary and May the 4th by bringing to life one of the most beloved characters in the galaxy,” the tweet reads. “Stay tuned for a special new LEGO STAR WARS construction set to celebrate this amazing milestone”.

The accompanying picture shows a minifigure-scale R2-D2 on a ’50 Lucasfilm’ celebratory brick. And I think we can all agree that R2-D2 fits the bill for “one of the most beloved characters in the galaxy”.

A new R2-D2 model would make sense, since the last brick-built model of the droid retired all the way back in 2014. And LEGO has a habit of re-releasing its Star Wars sets more than any other. Additionally, it seems LEGO may have already inadvertently teased its own model: the official images for the Imperial Probe Droid shows the top of an R2-D2 model at the bottom of the image (thanks, Brickset).

We doubt it’ll be long until LEGO officially announces the model, be it a new R2-D2 or otherwise. We’ll follow up with the official announcement when it arrives.
